Your relationship with the physicians who treat you and your children is built on trust. You trust doctors to maintain your privacy, advise you on your medical condition and treatments, and look out for your health and safety. Unfortunately, some doctors violate that trust in ways that cause their patients permanent physical, mental and/or emotional harm.
We don’t usually think of this happening in our local communities, but last week the Maryland State Board of Physicians revoked the medical license of allergy and immunology doctor Surender K. Vaswani. Vaswani was accused of inappropriately touching three teenage girls during exams. Vaswani, who operated the Allergy and Asthma Clinical Center Columbia and Westminster, has been licensed to practice in Maryland since 1993. He completed his residency at Johns Hopkins in 1995 and is affiliated with Carroll Hospital Center, Saint Agnes Healthcare, and Howard County General Hospital.

Maryland allergy and immunology doctor denies accusations by 3 teenagers

According to The Baltimore Sun, an administrative law judge conducted hearings in the case and recommended that Vaswani lose his license for three years and complete counseling before his license can be restored. The board began investigating Vaswani in 2017 after hearing allegations from three of his teenage patients. Throughout the investigation, Vaswani denied wrongdoing. The board made its final determination in January 2019 and Vaswani has filed an appeal with the Circuit Court for Howard County.
According to the board’s order, the patients, three girls between 15 and 16, said that Vaswani had touched them inappropriately during exams between 2009 and 2016. During one reported incident, a parent was actually in the room, but could not see what happened. After each incident, the girls immediately told family members and two incidents were also reported to authorities. Currently, no criminal charges have been filed.

Additional victims should contact a Maryland medical malpractice attorney

The Carroll County Times reported that Janice Kispert, CEO of Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County (RCIS), said she would not be surprised if there are more disclosures, “I’m sure other patients are questioning his behavior in retrospect, “ she said.
Whether they were victims of Dr. Vaswani or another doctor, when these cases get reported, it’s not unusual for other patients to come forward with additional accusations. Patients who believe they have been victims of inappropriate or unprofessional conduct or sexual misconduct should contact an attorney who specializes in medical malpractice. Schochor, Federico and Staton, P.A. led the $190 million settlement of the largest (at the time) single perpetrator sexual abuse case reported in U.S. history.
